Mrs Queen Takes the Train by William Kuhn

Mrs Queen Takes the Train is just a delight to read. Not my usual genre, not being even faintly interested in the royal family, yet from the first page this lovely novel had me hooked. The Queen is feeling faintly superfluous, she’s even wondering if she might be suffering from depression and ponders on how on earth she would manage to get some little pink pills without anyone noticing.

She decides that what she needs is to get out of the Palace and go on a little trip. This leads to a ragged chase by the royal household, everyone from the handsome Indian shop clerk who sells expensive cheese to her favourite horse Elizabeth, to her gay butler and her favourite first assistant – cockney tough talking, Shirley who forms an unholy alliance with her snotty lady-in waiting (they become best friends).

It's all very funny and quite charming. Reminiscentof Alan Bennett's The Uncommon Reader, it's a fabulous read and a great present for anyone.
